Can a Broken Lock Be Repaired, or Should It Be Replaced?

Many lock problems can be repaired, but severe wear, damage or outdated hardware can make replacement the safer choice.

Common repairable problems

A key that sticks, a latch that misses the strike plate, a loose knob or a cylinder that turns roughly may have a straightforward repair. A locksmith can diagnose whether the problem is the key, the lock itself or movement in the door and frame.

Signs replacement makes sense

Consider replacement when parts are cracked, corrosion is extensive, the lock has been forced, or the same failure keeps returning. New hardware may also be appropriate when you want a higher-security cylinder, keypad access or better key control.

Avoid forcing the lock

Repeatedly twisting a stuck key can break it inside the cylinder and turn a small repair into an urgent lockout. Stop when resistance feels unusual and call a locksmith for an inspection.
